About the Journal

Threads & Currents is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal emerging from the Communication and Culture program between York University and Toronto Metropolitan University. We are an open access journal interested in tracing the reciprocative threads and currents shaping and shaped by media technology within contemporary society. We invite submissions in the form of creative work, audio/video submissions, and academic writing from graduate-level researchers and artists.

As an editorial collective, we align ourselves with the Feminist Data Manifest-No’s “declaration of refusal and commitment” on data ethics and privacy. We recommend reading more about their calls for action at https://www.manifestno.com/.

Despite the presence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) in our society, we do not accept any submissions that use Gen-AI and instead encourage human creativity, vulnerability, mess, and ‘imperfection.’ We believe that as emerging writers, scholars, and artists, constructive and collaborative feedback will better prepare us for our future endeavours and creative crafts. Which we believe to build and publish work we are proud, requires flirting with failure, mediocre and many rough drafts.

The journal operates through the York University Libraries, and currently solely available through digital editions with the hopes of printing in the future.

Focus:

As a team, we align ourselves with challenging oppressive and restrictive academic practices and environments and invite both those pursuing academic and professional endeavours in and outside the program, an alternative space to share their work and contribute to our emerging journal.

Open Access Policy:

Threads & Currents is committed to providing free, immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research available to the public allows us to interrogate and tackle power through exchanges of knowledge and critical discussion.
