About the Journal

Threads & Currents is the graduate student-led Communication & Culture journal, home to the collaborative program between York University and Toronto Metropolitan University. This journal was founded on a set of goals to make academic and creative publishing accessible to emerging writers, scholars, and artists whilst making room for critical conversations, reimaginings, and expressions. The journal publishes original interdisciplinary research and research creation ranging from postcolonial studies and critical disability work to cinematic technologies and critical gender theory.

Call for Submissions – Currents of Change: Media, Activism, and Cultural Transitions

For the launch of our first issue, we are extending the theme of the 2026 Intersections | Cross-Sections conference: Currents of Change. We welcome research papers and artwork/research creation alike.

We encourage a wide range of interpretations of the theme, welcoming submissions that concern popular media platforms, mass-movements, how media plays a role in enacting change at levels cosmic, microscopic, and everywhere in between. Areas of exploration include, but are not limited to:

  • Media Activism and Social Change
  • Transnational or Local Currents of Cultural Transformation
  • Digital Resistance and Online Communities
  • Environmental Media and Planetary Imaginaries
  • Affective, Sensory, or Material Flows in Media Practice
  • Intersections of Art, Technology, and Protest
  • Changes in Practices of Everyday Relations
