Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal or conference for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in an editable, current word processor file format (e.g., OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF).
  • Where available, URL addresses in the text are hyperlinked.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and referential requirements outlined in the Submission Guidelines.
  • The text is spaced by 1.5; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses).
  • All images, figures, and tables are included within the manuscript file and are integrated into the text at appropriate points (rather than compiled at the end). Live links are provided for audio and/or video files.

Author Guidelines

Submissions are open to students working in disciplines and fields related to or within communication studies, media studies, and critical cultural studies across Canada. Preference will be given to graduate students, including recent alumni up to a year after graduating. T&C encourages submissions that embrace different perspectives on research and research creation, and that challenge narratives and assumptions of what academic work looks like. We welcome multimedia content as part of manuscript submissions.

How to Submit:

Submissions may take the form of academic articles, creative writing, visual art, or other forms of expression*. The submission form asks that you upload your complete work, in addition to information about your submission and author(s). Threads & Currents will only accept one submission per author(s) per issue. 

*Audio/visual submissions will not be currently considered – we instead encourage that you submit an artist statement/process capture/or any other form of static submission that represents the piece, which can be linked to directly in the Journal. 

Please fill out the submission form and upload your submission through the form. You do not need to login or register on this website in order to submit. 

The submission form requires that you include the following:

Information on Submission and Author(s):

  • If applicable, include the course name, course code, and institution/program the work was originally submitted to
  • If applicable, the grade received for the work, the name of the professor/TA who graded it, along with any comments or feedback you received
  • The full name, email address, university and program affiliation of all authors
    • Collaborative work should be submitted by only one of the contributors, who will be the designated contact person for all communications with the exception of seeking permission. If accepted, permission will be sought out from all authors via email and will only be published if each contributor gives written permission to do so.
  • Author bio(s), not exceeding 250 words

Multi-modal Submission:

The submission should be suitable for blind review. Only one file will be allowed per submission. Please remove all identifying references and information from the file (including metadata and file properties, if applicable), while including the following:

  • Word count (excluding references, appendices, or table/figure captions)
    • Academic papers must be between 4,000 to 6,000 words
    • Creative pieces must not exceed 3,000 words 
    • Creative pieces without words should not exceed 4 pages in A4 format
    • Submissions that exceed their designated word count will be automatically rejected
  • A descriptive title, paragraph abstract, and three to five descriptive keywords
    • The title and/or subtitle must not exceed 50 words
    • The abstract must be between 250 and 450 words
  • Sequential labels and numbering for tables and figures (e.g.,Figure 1, Figure 2… Table 1, Table 2…)
  • If applicable, appendices for supplementary information (e.g., data, calculations, interview transcripts)

For work that captures the face(s) of the author(s) and cannot be assessed without this identifying feature, please send it directly to threadsandcurrents@gmail.com with yaras29@yorku.ca CCed and special considerations will be provided to ensure an equitable review process. 

Stylistic and References Requirements:

  • Title the submission file as such: “lastname_firstname_tcsubmission”
  • Use APA 7th edition for in-text citations and references list (guidelines can be found here)
  • Use Canadian spelling (references and more information can be found here)
  • The text should be formatted in 1.5 spacing and in 12-point font, aligned left, with no paragraph indentations
  • Images should be in line with text, should have captions below them, and captions should be centered below the image
    • If applicable, captions should be descriptive
  • Alt text descriptions are required for each image (recommended guidelines and references can be found here)
    • They must not exceed 50 words
  • Citations for all images must included in the References section of your submission
  • Abbreviations should be clearly defined within the text
  • Notes should be used sparingly and only where additional explanations are absolutely necessary
    • A maximum of 3 will be accepted

If you feel that there is a good reason that your submission does not comply with any or all of the above, address each aspect in the’ Comments for Editors’ section of the submission form. 

Copyright Notice

Use of Third-Party Material: All third-party content in any submission to Threads & Currents must conform to the Fair Dealing exception in the Canadian Copyright (which you can learn more about here), otherwise you must provide copies of your copyright permission. 

Publication License Agreement: If your work is accepted, you will receive a contract to license the publication of your work under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). This license allows authors and readers to download and share content with others as long as they credit the authors, do not change it, and do not use it commercially. More information about this form of licensing can be found here. 

Privacy Statement

By submitting to Threads & Currents, you agree to the following terms:

  • You and/or your group are the original authors of your submitted work.
  • Explicit, written consent must be obtained for all original data collection and subsequent identifying references to individuals, groups, and/or organizations to be publicly identified in the Journal. 
  • All third-party content in the submission conforms to the Fair Dealing exception in the Canadian Copyright (which you can learn more about here), otherwise you must provide copies of your copyright permission. 
  • Threads & Currents reserves the right to withdraw your work from publication at any stage of the editing process if academic dishonesty is discovered. 
  • Threads & Currents reserves the right to reject work the editorial team deems hateful as part of our zero-tolerance policy. This would encompass work deemed sexist, racist, classist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, ageist, or any other form of discrimination and/or prejudice.  

In turn, Threads & Currents agrees to the following terms:

  • The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.  
  • All submitted work will be reviewed through a double-blind review process (which you can read about here)
  • The author(s) may request to take down their work at any point after publishing (following our take-down policies here)
  • The author (s) retain copyright of their publications and are permitted to publish the work in whole or part elsewhere, contingent on granting the right of first publication to T&C, sending written permission from all involved authors to threadsandcurrents@gmail.com, and including the following publishers statement:
    • “This [work] was originally published by Threads & Currents: A Journal of Communication & Culture by Toronto Metropolitan University and York University’s joint Communication & Culture program. The original article is available to read at: [link to article].”
